FEELINGS OF DESPAIR

My IT Band isn’t getting better. It might be getting worse. I’m taking today, and who knows how many other days off, until it gets better. I learned from my shin splints years ago, but it sucks.

Runners don’t deal with injuries well, or maybe its just me. Let’s just say that there were lots of tears during my exercises this morning, mostly because I’m freaked out about running Boston in two months with this stupid thing. I have a great base, so if I don’t have to take too much time off, it shouldn’t have that much of an impact. Hopefully.

I think I’ve narrowed down the issue, and my fiance, the super smart PT, agrees. I think my butt muscles aren’t strong enough in comparison to my quads, which is putting strain on the IT Band. I am also convinced my desk chair has something to do with it because a few weeks ago, I couldn’t figure out why it stopped being able to lean back. Yesterday, it came unlocked so hopefully a little extra comfort will help. I also brought a blanket in, not only to look like a super dorky old lady, but to add some extra cushion. I tried asking for a new chair and was told we would have new chairs in our new office (end of March), which is nearly two months away. Because that helps.

Anyways, sorry for the negativity. This cheered me up for a bit, and hopefully now that you are wallowing in my own despair, this will help:

  • I'm right there with you in the IT band pain! Having dealt with it for a few weeks now my advice is to definitely rest and roll! Oh and I know all about having the strengthen the glute! Engage the glute! :)

Ugh. Been there with the IT issues. Finally over my piriformis problem (thanks to yoga) and ran three slow miles on the hated treadmill now that a pulled calf muscle has finally settled down. After being out for three weeks after the visit to the ER, I’m trying not to freak out. I may be looking at switching to the half in Eugene instead of the full. Bummed, but it will still be fun. Injuries are so disheartening! Keeping my fingers crossed that your IT settles down for Boston.

Live and train by RICE….Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Recovery is really important ! Having dealt with IT band issues in years past, i feel your pain. Make sure to warmup (dynamic stretching) and cool down properly. I beat my IT band issues when I paid more attention, and time, to recovery and properly warming up/stretching after workouts. Foam roller also helps as well !
