THE EXCITEMENT BUILDS

I haven’t written a great deal about running Boston this year because I’ve been so focused on my stupid IT Band. Yes, it’s stupid. But it’s starting to smarten up. I’m not sure if the same can be said of the girl who doesn’t know what MPH means. (Watch this video if you haven’t already. It’s hilarious. And I totally relate with her because we all have “blonde” moments — don’t act like you don’t. It just happens that she also has blonde hair…)
But anyways, the excitement for Boston is starting to build. I received my runner’s packet in the mail yesterday that outlines all the details of the weekend.
I seriously could read all of this word for word.
Boston is such an incredible event and I am looking forward to it, especially since I’ll have hill training this year. In 2010, we were living in Florida and I had no hill training minus one bridge. It made for some very sore quads! I’ve also been training myself to eat lunch a little later, because I know in 2010, at noon, I was starving and I don’t want that feeling again.
As for goals for this year’s Boston, I’m not sure what I want to do. I want to beat my time from 2010 (3:42). I would love to break 3:30. But I have to be realistic because of the recent injury and the fact that my knee continues to flare up. Plus, this will be my first race post giving up gluten so I’m not sure how that will impact things (maybe I won’t feel as crappy as I did for Houston?). Most of all — and I say this for every marathon — I just want to have fun and enjoy the moment. That is why I run marathons anyways, to have a good time and of course to collect a bunch of runner junk to clutter our apartment.
Now I need to start focusing on my outfit… well at least closer to the day of the race. Kara over at Kara Runs posted a picture of her Nike Yankees shorts and I really want to get a pair! Probably not the smartest thing to wear in Boston… ha (as my Dad said, I would probably get egged throughout the race). Remember that Under Armour tank I got at the outlet mall? I definitely want to wear that. It feels like it will be so comfortable! Plus you can never go wrong with pink.
I also splurged on some PRO Compression Socks for post-race wear, thanks to Active.com’s awesome Schwaggle deal for 50 percent off. There’s still a day left, so make sure you get on that.
Do you have any epic blonde moments? How do you figure out what you’re going to wear for race day?

hahahah wow that video is so funny! I love the guy. I have lots of blonde moments so I can't say anything. Once, some friends were talking about Razors (that thin phone that used to be popular) and someone said, "I accidentally put a razor through the washing machine once" and I said…"didn't that cut up all your clothes?!" Yeah. Embarrassing.
Anyway, yeah…probably shouldn't wear Yankees shorts in Boston
but I'm glad you like them! I love picking out race outfits!
Hahah that's hilarious!! Trust me, I have a few blonde moments like that as well…
I'm so excited for you! I love Boston! Such an exciting spirited marathon. I also love planning my outfit. i basically walk into lulu or Nike and use my upcoming marathon as an excuse to splurge!
I learned the hard way to never wear anything new in a marathon. I bought a cute little pink running skirt for my very first marathon, having never worn it on a single run beforehand, and had TERRIBLE chafing by the end of the race. At Boston, I wore a pair of shorts that I had only worn on shorter runs. More chafing (and this is usually never an issue, even on long runs). Never again!
Chafing is the WORST feeling in the world when you are going 26.2 miles! Good points though — I should "train" my marathon gear.
I'm with Leave Tracks – I did an 18 mile race in capris without undies (I guess I had never worn them comando for such a long run before?) and let me tell you…those seems in the bum? They become CHAFE CITY. OUCH! So yeah, definitely test stuff out before race day.
I usually like capri pants best because I found that even my best shorts could start to bunch up / do funny things after hours of running (well, if you qualified for Boston, it's probably not as many hours as it was for me (5:01:16), anyway
). And, at the risk of totally grossing you out…I like to wear black because, well…if there are more runners than there are porta-potties…black just seems safe. Case in point: peeing my pants during my first half. It was pouring rain so I figured with the black + rain no one could tell – see – black = great!
Congrats on Boston and good luck! – Princess Overshare.
OUCH! That sounds painful. And black is a great idea, especially since you never know what can happen on race day!
