BURN OUT

My day was made yesterday after I got this email:

I love Dick Beardsley! He has such an incredible story and (along with Meb!) is one of my favorite elite runners. I was lucky enough to meet him last April at the Boston Marathon (20th anniversary of his iconic race with Alberto Salazar). So as you can see, there is good reason why I’m so excited!
So yesterday I came to a realization that I am burnt out. Burnt out mentally, physically, emotionally. Good thing we are leaving for vacation in 48 hours. It has been a stressful few months and well, I do realize that I put some of the stress on myself. But in some ways, I don’t think I function as well if I don’t have a full plate. I think it just got a little too full.
Crossing the finish line at the Staten Island Half Marathon yesterday chipped a little stress off my back.
I now have guaranteed entry in the 2012 NYC Half Marathon! And I fulfilled my 9+1 requirement! So that means less racing (which I think my body will appreciate, my mind not so much) for the rest of the year. I feel like my legs are losing their spring… but there are just so many good races.
Must. Change. Mentality.
At least I won’t be signing up to race one every single weekend.
Zippering up our last suitcase chipped a LOT of stress off my back. DIY, done. Planning, done. Relaxing, on the way.
And that also means it’s time to start daydreaming about Jamaica and Spain. About time.
Well, enough about me… it’s time to announce the winner of the awesome Gold Bond giveaway! [drum roll please]
…Congratulations to Nicole at Apples and Arteries!!

Please email me at bklynrunning (at) gmail.com before Wednesday with your mailing address and we’ll get your goodies shipped out. Thanks to all who entered, look for another giveaway in about a week and a half!
Do you tend to put too many responsibilities on your plate? How do you recover from burn out?

Congratulations on earning a spot in the NYC 1/2 Marathon girl. That a lone is such an awesome accomplishment. Take time for yourself, and to get your body back to normal again. Enjoy vacation.. relax relax & relax
Thanks! I'm so excited for it!
You deserve to have a relaxing wedding and honeymoon!!!!
Thanks, girl!!!
Dick Beardsley is so cool!!! I met him in person a couple of years ago (2010) when he was in Spokane to do a Bloomsday kick off event. I told him I was running Boston that April and he autographed a poster for me. His story is very touching and inspiring!
It really is!! I read his book and Alberto Salazar's in the same week and it's amazing how much his personality comes through… you feel like you are talking to him! I just love elite athletes in running though, they all seem to be pretty great.
Oh do I ever!! I always feel like I can't function unless I have an "all you can eat" sign on my mental plate of responsibilities and plans. I have a half marathon in 2 weeks and I am looking forward to that being done and taking a few days to do nothing (or at least that's the plan…) Have a fantastic holiday!
Hahah that's such a good way to put it — "all you can eat" sign!
Woohoo! Thanks!!
There's a part of me that thrives on functioning at full speed but unfortunately that usually means a burnout every few weeks!
I hear ya! How do you recover when you're burnt out?
That's really cool!! My dad ran in college in Minnesota with him.
I remember you saying that!! SO jealous of your Dad…
Congrats on your half marathon! I hope you enjoy your vacation! I sympathize with this post, as I have been burnt out since I went for my last one rep max cycle at crossfit a few weeks ago. I just took a week off to catch up on rest, sleep, and everything else in life. I wish I was going somewhere sunny and tropical, too. Pack me in your suitcase, please!
Thanks!! Ahh that sounds amazing. I think sometimes you need to do that. And yes, jump in! Heheh
Congrats again on the half! I've got a feeling this time in Jamaica and Spain will be just what the doctor ordered for your burnout!! Have fun!!
Thanks, girl!! I may never come back… haha
