Today has been a flurry of activity… from waking up at 6 a.m. to run (more on that in a bit), to going to see Django (when I thought we were seeing Les Mis) to picking out my outfit for New Year’s Eve… and finishing it off with some margaritas and nachos in the neighborhood.
Anyways, last night we went to one of our favorite restaurants in the city, Shortys. We actually discovered this place through a Groupon that we bought when we first moved here and have been loyal customers ever since. If you love craft beer, cheesesteaks and watching sports, this is the place for you.
And it’s good for fueling for long runs… especially the last 20 miler before the Houston Marathon! I debated about switching my run to Sunday all week because the forecast called for a wintry mix, which later switched to snow. But hey, I’m from Wisconsin and I can definitely handle it…
I woke up this morning and was expecting to see at least some snowflakes flying through the sky.
Me and every 5 year old living in the city were so disappointed. Luckily the snowflakes appeared later in the day.
Back to running. I am notorious for having my last 20 miler be the worst. Usually I end my run in tears and limping home, freaking out because its only a few weeks before the marathon and I can’t even run 20 milers. I started off to a good start — no gut issues, Hammer gel in the Fuel Belt and ready to go.
Overall I felt pretty sluggish, maybe it’s from our big dinner last night or just being exhausted. I did pick it up during the last half and the last mile was probably my best… I saw the bus that stops in front of our apartment when I was a mile from home and decided to race it. I won! Small victories.
Three random thoughts from this morning’s run:
- Have you ever seen a poodle not walk like it was stuck up? I saw two poodles this morning and both of them acted like they owned the park.
- Even though feels like is in the 20s and it’s clearly winter, geese, swans and ducks are still swimming in the lake in Prospect Park. Aren’t they cold? Are they nuts? Apparently even the wild animals in NYC are hardcore.
- Pet peeve alert: I really hate when people don’t cut the plastic circles on the 6-pack plastic… I always think of the poor birds who get caught in them. It takes two seconds so just do it!
