Last night I finally had met with my nutritionist. I was actually probably more excited than a cat in a yarn store. I did the requested pre-assignment (do a few days of food journaling) and was ready.

I must say that part of me was a little nervous. I think that I eat pretty healthy. But I do have a few bad habits… like drinking Mountain Dew… and eating too many Starburst Jelly Beans.

And of course, some of my nerves came from the fact that I thought she might tell me I completely have to change my diet and can’t eat a, b and c moving forward.

Turns out, my nerves were for no reason. I had a really good chat with her about what I’m currently eating, IBS and running… as well as my goals.

So what is my goal? My ultimate goal behind this is to figure out how many calories I need to be eating and where I can improve to be a faster, better runner. And it sounds like we’ll get there.

The number one thing I learned tonight: I am not eating enough calories. I’ll learn exactly how many I should be eating at our next appointment, but until then, I need to increase by about 300-500 calories a day so I’m eating around 1,800 calories a day.

I also need to bring fruit and vegetables back into my diet.

YUM.

No arguments there! When I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with IBS, he said I needed to cut back on fruits and vegetables. And I was really sad about it. So knowing that I can eat it again… so excited about it! She did warn me that there may be some… challenges. But by being able to identify these challenges, it will make managing it so much easier (and may mean I don’t have to be on medication for-ev-er).

Another thing I need to start doing is to eat before runs. Sure, I do this before long runs… but my 6 a.m. runs are usually up, stretch, go. I was relieved to hear that “eating” before my non-long runs was simply grabbing a handful of crackers, pretzels or something. I can do that.

I have some work to do over the next few weeks, but I am so excited to learn more about my calorie intake and take steps forward to better health and better running!
