I am one of those runners that has a problem with… well, running too much.

That probably sounds silly, but when given a block of time to work out, I tend to use it all to run. While this is great for my heart (and why nurses take my pulse several times), it’s not great for my overall fitness. And it’s something I need to work on.

Enter Cathe.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard about Cathe Friedrich and her phenomenal workouts, but they are just that. She combines cardio with exercises that help you tone so I don’t have to feel guilty about saving some miles and staying inside for a workout.

I was given the opportunity to try out the 9th DVD in her XTrain series — Tabatacise.


Tabata training is a type of workout that is focused on short, intense workouts to help build aerobic capacity and your ability to burn fat. Usually, tabatas are 8 high-intensity 20-second intervals, which is followed by a 10-second recovery.

Sound easy?

Well, it’s not. It’s one of the toughest workouts that I’ve done. The best thing about Cathe’s DVD is that she breaks it down into different levels, so you can customize it based on your fitness level. I took at stab at Tabata 1 which was focused on a lot of jumping/plyometrics workouts… which for sore legs is TOUGH. On the same page, it’s exactly the type of workout that I need to be doing.

Cathe also threw in a few extra workouts, like two core routines as well as a “bonus burn set back.” I did a core workout, that was about 10 minutes long (which is right in the range I need to commit to daily) and it was so tough that I couldn’t even do every exercise… but it definitely gives me something to work towards.


So much for thinking that I was in shape.

I really enjoyed working out to Cathe’s DVD and I think it’s a great supplement to my running obsession. While my time for working out is limited for now (boo), I know this will become an integral part of my workout routine after Big Sur. In the meantime, the core workouts will definitely be part of my weekly workouts.
