I will be the first to admit that when it comes to doing anything besides running, I am a huge slacker. To me, running is the best exercise… it’s so easy to jump into some workout clothes, slip on the running shoes and hit the road.
I have learned that it’s important to work on other muscle groups… like your abs and arms… that might not get the benefit that other muscles do with running.
This (old) article from Runner’s World gives some good insight why working on your abs is important:
Okay, yes… ab workouts need to be a focus. And I must admit that during this training cycle, I kind of slacked on that. Last summer I was doing so good with kettlebell, ab, etc. workouts and then I kind of slipped off the map when it was like “Ooh! Running! Lots and lots of running” … so, it’s time to get back on track and give some love to these abs.
I kicked off April with a wonderful six mile run and followed it up with an 8-minute ab workout:
Oh my goodness, did it HURT. But definitely in a good way. It shows how out of shape these babies are. Eesh.
I’m not sure I have enough time to make a difference before Boston (14 more days! 14 more days! 14 more days!), but I can at least look forward to making an impact for future races and of course, SUMMER = bikini season.
And P.S., I always get a kick out of doing my ab workouts because I do them in the kitchen (biggest room in the apartment!) so I snicker when I think of the famous favorite saying, “abs are made in the kitchen” … why yes, yes, they are.
