Today was an easy five mile run in the park. Spring is definitely here and after last night’s rainstorm, definitely felt the humidity.
This may sound strange, but I love running in spring and summer weather because you actually sweat which just makes it feel like you’re working out so much harder. Even if you aren’t.
Unless you live in Minnesota. Then you are still bundled up like a cold December day. Sorry.
Next time I run five miles… it will be on the roads headed to Boston! I seriously cannot believe that it’s just around the corner. But then I can. Because I’m in taper phase. Some plans require that you are in taper for three weeks, while others (the ones I like best) only have you do two weeks. I feel like three weeks is just too long and you start to lose part of your fitness… I did it for the first couple marathons and decided it just was too long for me.
Besides, I have such a love/hate relationship with it… I feel like there are some distinct thoughts that are associated with taper… a sampling:
- OMG OMG OMG this is the best ever! I get to sleep in and I have so much time! No more tired legs!
- Ugh, I really wish that I could just go out and RUN… would it be a big deal if I really went a few extra miles??
- Is that a sore throat? Does my leg hurt? AM I GETTING SICK? Nooo….
- Holy cow, how am I going to run 26.2 miles? I feel winded going up and down the stairs.
Basically, taper makes me feel like I’m going crazy. I think after using so much energy during training for the past 16 weeks, the fact that you have so much extra energy works against you… and since you aren’t exhausted from all the training, it has to come somewhere.
