Happy National Running Day!

I love today because it’s all about showing some love for running. Sometimes I feel like running is very misunderstood. How many times have you heard people say “ugh, I hate running… it’s so {insert word}.”

I’m pretty sure at some point in all of our lives, we all used to hate running. I know I used to! If you told my 12-year-old self that I would be running marathons someday, I’m pretty sure I would have thought you were nuts.

And I’m sure the people who are the true haters have never felt that runner’s euphoria. You know, that point that you hit after running for awhile and you are all like ohmigodthisismazing.

I think it’s really cool that the organizers have a way for you to pledge why you run. Here is what I came up with:

But honestly, it’s more than that. I feel like running has become part of who I am (maybe because I talk about it non-stop a lot?) and I feel a little lost when I don’t have a run scheduled into my day. It has a lot of great benefits, sure, but I think my favorite one is that it helps to clear my head so I am not just a big ol’ stressball all day long. Which could legitimately happen living in this city. This results in me being smiley and happy all day long. Which is never a bad thing. 🙂

I also love all the great people that I’ve met through running! My circle of friends here in NYC are basically all people that I’ve met through runs. And, it really helped my college roommate (random freshman roommate) and I bond… she is one of my best friends and was my maid of honor in our wedding!

So running is a great thing. Embrace it… enjoy it for what’s it worth! And don’t forget to grab a friend along the way to enjoy the (s)miles.

(And if you are in Houston, please go see Meb today! He will be signing books and will even be running with locals. SO jealous…)
