Big thanks to REPREVE for sponsoring today’s post and encouraging us to #TurnItGreen. This may seem like a post that is a little out of the ordinary for Crazy Running Girl, but I love the idea behind REPREVE and what it is doing for our environment. After all, our population keeps booming… we keeping wasting… and the Earth keeps suffering.
(Plus I like knowing that my Mountain Dew obsession contributes to the greater good… which means it’s OK to drink, right?)
Anyways, REPREVE may be a company that you haven’t heard of before today, but it is something that has been part of your daily life for years. REPREVE is a recycled fiber that is made from plastic bottles (the ones labeled with “1”).
The company works with top brands, like North Face, Volcom and Ford. So, if you ever get a chance to ride in a Ford Fusion hybrid, know that the cloth seats are actually made from 42 recycled bottles! Volcom graphic t-shirts are made with REPREVE, using 2 recycled plastic bottles.
I think it’s so awesome that The North Face is part of this initiative. Those awesome jackets that everyone wears (and that has been on my wish list for years)? If it has the little “R” symbol, it means that the fibers for the jacket are made from 51 recycled bottles. Volcom
So why am I telling you all of this? The U.S. plastic bottle-recycling rate is less than 30 percent—so less than one-third of all plastic bottles get recycled. Most people don’t think about what happens to plastic bottles after you recycle them. So REPREVE is on a mission to get the word out: Just recycle more.
Whenever you can, make sure you are recycling those plastic bottles… don’t just trash them at the first chance you get. It makes a difference. And as you can see, you can end up with some pretty cool clothing items. Like these beanies, which are made from six recycled plastic bottles:
Are you a recycler? What do you think of REPREVE’s initiative?
