In case you missed it, Hug a Runner Day was November 20. The idea behind Hug a Runner Day is to serve as a day that we celebrate our accomplishments as runners and spread all the love in the running community… great idea to spread a positive message in the running world!

Run the Edge (founded by Kara Goucher’s husband, Adam) spearheads the day and held a virtual race this year as part of the celebrations.

I have participated in a few different virtual races and I find that they are pretty fun. I like that you can run them whenever you want, and it serves as a good way to challenge yourself. Plus, there’s the aspect of connecting with other racers through social media, which is always fun!

I opted for the half marathon distance this year and thought it would be great to leverage some of my training runs for the distance, rather than just running it all at once. I talked about it a little bit earlier this week, but this truly made it possible to get in some of my harder miles last week!

The Hug a Runner Day Virtual Race had different levels of participation. You could sign up for the virtual race, which I believe was about $5, or you could also opt for a medal. You could also go for the whole package — race, medal, and t-shirt. That’s what I did… and I love the medal!

The t-shirt is pretty awesome too:

Plus, 100% of the race proceeds benefits Girls on the Run, which is an amazing charity. If you are looking for a virtual race next fall, definitely add this one to your calendar.

Have you run virtual races before? What did you think?
