I never thought, in a million years, that I would ever become one of those people. You know, the ones that go to fitness classes and can’t stop talking about how amazing it is and how everyone needs to join. 

 

 

Over the past few months, there have been a few different things that I’ve learned along the way… that will only make your fitness class journey much more enjoyable. 

 

1. Get it engrained in your schedule.

In your mind. In everything. I make it one of those things where I cannot negotiate missing my fitness class. Oh, you’re having a happy hour? Sorry, fitness class. Need me to work late? Um, maybe in an hour after I finish this sweat sesh.

  

2. Don’t freak out if you can’t hear or understand the instructor.

I don’t know how many times I’ve tuned out the fitness instructor as they are showing us a new exercise or talking about the next thing that we’ll be doing. Ooops. But seriously, after a long work day? Sometimes my mind is tired. They will likely repeat it about 6 more times because I think they know how easy it is to tune out. Especially 50 minutes in. 😉 

 

 

3. Ladies, wear a padded sports bra.

Just trust me. You will be working out, but it will be in an air conditioned room… so yeah, take it from experience. A padded sports bra is preferred. 

 

4. Make friends with the people you see at every single class.

It will likely take a while to build a strong relationship, but it makes it so much more enjoyable when you know you have a few people that you’ll recognize for that class you really don’t want to go to, and you can make plans together of how you can secretly escape without the instructor noticing. 

 

5. Stretch!

I seriously love the last five minutes of class where we stretch and cool down. Your body deserves it after killing it in the workout that you just subjected it to. So, take a few minutes, give your body the rest and let yourself relax. Just don’t fall asleep. 

 

6. Push your limits. That’s what fitness classes are all about, right? Having someone else push your boundaries to take you beyond where you thought you could go. And this isn’t just physical! I’ve learned way more about my mental strength than my physical strength through Orangetheory Fitness. 

 

7. Don’t compare yourself to everyone else. This is hard. Oh so hard. I mean, this is basically what America does, right? But honestly, this is one of the reasons why I love OTF. It’s all about YOU and your capability (not like the Crossfit classes I’ve been to). Sure, you can take a look at what your neighbor is doing and try to “race”… but some people will burn more calories; some will work harder than you but sweat less; and others will just do their own thing. It’s all about YOU and what you’re trying to get out of the class. 

 

 

8. Ask questions. Something doesn’t make sense? A fitness move hurts? Ask the instructor… that’s what they are there for and from what I’ve learned, they LOVE to hear your questions! It makes you smarter and helps you to get more out of the workout, which is always a bonus. 

 

9. Drink the Kool-Aid. Yes, I said it. This is the most important thing. Whatever fitness class you want to do, go all in. 100%. People will be negative, they’ll tell you why they hate it, but know why you love it and why it works for you. So drink it, and enjoy it.
