Hi Friday!

Yesterday was one of the toughest workouts we ever did at Orangetheory Fitness. For the first time, I didn’t think I was going to make it through the track workout. We were doing hills and it was killer, but I made it through — no matter how bad my legs and mind wanted me to stop, I wasn’t going to let that happen. It will be a moment I will remember at mile 16 of the Santa Rosa Marathon. 

Anyways, I’ve been thinking about some of the things I’ve started doing in the past few months that I guess you could classify as hacks? I’ve found that they’ve helped me be more successful than anything I’ve done in the past. 


>>> Always get your fitness gear ready the night before, especially if you have a morning workout or class. It means you don’t even have to think about what you’re doing, you just get geared up and suddenly it’s time to get out the door. 

>>> Balance on one foot while you brush your teeth. Is it sad that when I first started doing this, I couldn’t make it the full time without having to put my foot down? I’ve improved so much! I sometimes will do tricep dips while I use mouthwash too. 

>>> Make deals with yourself. Let yourself have that soda, say, after you drink 32 ounces of water. Or give yourself that cheat meal if you make it through all of your planned workouts for the week. They sound silly, but they work! You are the best negotiator with yourself after all. 🙂 And sometimes, once you get through what you negotiated, you don’t even want the cheat anymore.

>>> Find something that annoys you a ton and think about it during your workout. Now, this might not work for everyone. I have friends that say that this is a distraction and makes them slower. But for me, it gives me fuel and makes me more focused. Like the whole Cecil the lion thing… that kept me going for a really long morning run. 

>>> Don’t buy your favorite bad foods. If they aren’t in the kitchen, you won’t eat them. It’s that simple. (Hence why you’ll never find Cheetos in my house!)

>>> Tell the world about your workouts. I have such a hard time skipping a workout if I told everyone and their mom that I was going to do it. It makes me feel guilty. Which is one of the reasons why I love blogging and social media. 

>>> In a slump? Buy new fitness gear. It works! Treat yourself to new fitness gear, whether it’s socks or a fancy new pair of shorts. Whatever it is, now you have to get out and try it out… a good way to get moving again. 🙂

>>> If you’re grabbing food, ask yourself why. This is the biggest thing I’ve changed this training cycle, how much I’m eating. I used to eat because I thought I deserved it, even if I wasn’t hungry. Now, I rarely have a snack and make sure my meals aren’t large because my eyes are hungry.
