Happy happy Friday! I am so excited to join up with Courtney’s link up at Eat Pray Run DC. I like to do these from time to time and today is a good one!
The post topic is “5 running tips,” and I thought I would put my own personal spin on it… 5 things I wish I knew before I started running.
In the past 15 years, I have learned so many different things about this sport. Some things it took me awhile to realize, other things I learned within the first day of being a runner. But now! I want to share my learnings with you because it will make your running experience so much more enjoyable. 🙂
1. It’s going to hurt. And you might hate it.
Running isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. You may think it is because you hear all of us bloggers talk about the ermahgerd amazing run that we just went on.
But no, it’s not always like that. It’s going to hurt. Your shins will burn, muscles that you didn’t even realize that you had will hurt. Your lungs will scream at you, your hair may even hurt.
And secondly, you may hate it. You may get out there and think about how stupid it is. THIS IS NORMAL. I still do this.
But you know what? Afterwards, it will FEEL SO GOOD.
2. Body Glide is your friend.
This was quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve done in my running journey… ignore the goodness that is Body Glide (I actually use THIS stuff from Gold Bond and love it).
Oh trust me, you want to have this stuff on because the chafing can be painful. Not just while you run, but in the shower… and putting on real pants… and just sitting there.
3. It’s OK to walk.
For years, I would criticize myself and beat myself up for walking during a run. Whether it wasn’t my day or if the weather wasn’t on my side, I always saw walking as a weakness. It’s NOT. It can be the smartest thing that you do in a situation! Some days are just not your days, and it takes more courage to admit that and listen to your body.
4. Wear the right sports bra.
This was just a recent learning of myself, but wow. Having the right sports bra makes you so much more comfortable! It makes such a difference. And it’s also important for the health of your girls. So definitely, go get a sports bra fitting. Invest in a good sports bra. And, thank me later.
5. Don’t be scared to run a race.
It can be SO intimidating to get into the racing scene. Everyone seems so fast and like they know exactly what they are doing. But don’t be worried! Runners are one of the most welcoming groups of people that I have ever met. You will definitely belong and have a great time. Just trust me! You will LOVE races once you try it.
What do you wish you knew about running before you started?
