Today marks the Olympic Marathon Trials and I am SO excited to watch! For the first time ever, NBC will be airing the Olympic Marathon Trials live and it makes me so excited to be able to see all of my favorite people racing on TV. I called a bar yesterday to see if they would be airing it, and the guy was so confused — “um, is it Pay Per View?” Ha no, NBC!
Anyways, here are my predictions of who will make it on America’s Olympic team for the marathon:
1. Shalane Flanagan
Oh, how I love Shalane! She is such a little spitfire and so talented. I know she was dealing with a little bit of an injury this training cycle, but I really want to see her do well. Her passion for the sport is so amazing, and she is so very inspirational.
2. Kara Goucher
Much like Meb, Kara has had a number of ups and downs in her career. I feel like it’s on an upswing… and even though she’s considered “old” for the sport (and many people have counted her out), I think she can be very successful in this race and qualify for the Olympics.
3. Desiree Linden
Desi is such a quiet force. I feel like people don’t give her credit for her work ethic and her talent, simply because she’s quiet about it and just goes out and does it. I feel like Desi could place number one or number two, depending on what kind of day that Shalane has, but I’m super pumped to watch her go at it and run an amazing race.
1. Meb Keflezighi
Anyone who knows me will not be surprised by this prediction. Meb Keflezighi is one of my favorite American runners and he deserves to be in the top 3 so much. I would love to see him compete in another Olympics. I feel like he’s been quiet this training cycle, so am interested to see how that translates into his results.
2. Galen Rupp
Galen is a newcomer to the marathon game, but I think he has SO much potential that he’s shown through his other (shorter) races. He also is coached by Alberto Salazar, who is a marathon master himself. I could see Galen potentially taking first place, depending on how Meb’s race goes.
3. Dathan Ritzenhein
Ritz! I know this is kind of a shocker. But, I feel like this may be Ritz’s time to shine. He has had a career that has had many ups and downs, and I would love to see him come out on top in the Olympic Marathon Trials this time around. I don’t think he has it in him for a first place finish, but could definitely see him nailing third place.
