Hamilton Pool | Austin, TX

So, I made a commitment to myself this year that I would try one new thing a month! This month, I wanted to try archery but couldn’t find a class that seemed to work (I’m still searching! Austin, any ideas?!) and suddenly, it was creeping on the end of the month and I hadn’t tried anything new.

Instead, I went to my bucket list for things that I want to do in Austin… and Hamilton Pool topped the list! It is this gorgeous swimming spot just outside of Austin, TX and decided to finally venture out there.

Hamilton Pool is actually really hard to get into during the summer months. They only let cars in for the number of parking spots that they have, and it’s a really small parking lot. It opens at 9 a.m. and there’s no waiting at the gates, so I don’t know if people hide out on the road? Anyways, we tried to go last summer, and they wouldn’t even let us pull in the driveway (we went around 2 p.m., so definitely too late).

Touring Hamilton Pool

Since it’s not quite peak season yet, I didn’t go until later in the day and it was no problem getting in.

First, started with the quick hike (about 1/2 mile) that you can to get to the Pedernales River. It was a really pretty hike, and I couldn’t get over how gorgeous the water looked:

From there, finally ventured over to Hamilton Pool.

It is called a grotto, a kind of cave that has been used by humans in the past (thanks, Wikipedia). It is absolutely breathtaking and HUGE! Plus, there’s a pretty awesome waterfall (as you can see) that flows down off the side.

The swimming part looked really deep (eek!) so I’m not sure I’d venture in there. I would definitely make the trek back to Hamilton Pool in the summer months to see it surrounded by beautiful green leaves. And, maybe figure out how the whole getting in right at 9 a.m. works!

This was a really fun adventure for my try something new this month! If you are in the Austin area and looking for a fun day trip, it is definitely worth it to pay the $15 to park at Hamilton Pool and explore the area. Like I said, I will be back in the summer to check it out once again!

Did you try anything new this month? What?

Do you have any cool hikes like Hamilton Pool near you? Names? [in case I come visit!]
