With summer running just around the corner (and well, already here in Texas!), this month Running Coaches Corner is all about summer runnin’. Join up with Susie, Debbie, Rachel and me as we talk about everything and anything you need to make running this summer a success.

Last week I talked about why you should like summer running (I know, enjoying running in the heat, really?), and this week, it’s all about the gear that you need to survive summer running.

Best gear to survive summer running | Crazy Running Girl

Get the sweat out of your eyes

I don’t know about you, but I sweat BUCKETS in the summer months! Wearing contact lenses means that my eyes are a little bit more sensitive than they should be so when any sweat gets in my eyes, omg does it burn. I try to avoid this at all costs! I’ve found there are a few things to protect my eyes.

For one, a good pair of sunglasses makes all the difference because it can actually prevent sweat from getting into your eyes. I personally love Ryder Eyewear, especially because they have a great fit and technology that keeps them protected from the sun’s rays better than a pair of cheaper glasses.

Secondly, I’ve fallen in love with trucker hats. These are great to wear when it’s raining too because the brim keeps the rain away from my face, but I love it in the summer because it also shields my eyes and traps the sweat.

Usually I rely on these when it’s not that sunny out because otherwise my eyes will die without having sunglasses. On those days, I love wearing Manda Bees Headbands

These things do wonders to keep your hair under control and prevent the sweat from dripping in your face. They are also super cute too, which is an added bonus!

Keep your body cool

Finding the right running gear makes a HUGE difference in determining whether you are cool enough to survive a run in the heat. I love the HeatGear Technology from UA and Brooks Running has recently come out with some tanks and shorts that help a TON.

I also avoid wearing any cotton and stick with light, bright shorts. Black is definitely not my favorite color in the summer! I stick to white or anything that is neon because it seems to do better with the sun.

Some of my favorite gear for summer runs include:

  • Fabletics Neema Tank: Fabletics has a TON of light and airy gear that works great for running in the summer heat. I just bought this one and ran in it once, and loved the fit. I do think you have to be careful with some of the shirts that are more flowy because the fit isn’t as strong and can mean you spend more time adjusting your shirt than actually wearing it.
  • Brooks Running Ghost Racerback Shirt: I love this tank because it is so light that it literally does not feel like you have anything on! I am not a sports bra runner, so I like having some coverage with this that doesn’t add TOO much weight.
  • Brooks Running Steady Sleeveless Running Shirt: This one has a little bit more coverage, but I love the feel of this material. I’ve run in this in some hot weather days already, and it does a good job of keeping you cool.
  • Tek Gear V-Neck Racing Tank: If you are looking for some affordable gear that you can rock in the summer months, I love this tank from Tek Gear. I have several items from this clothing line from Kohl’s, and I’m always a fan of the fit and how comfortable they are.
  • Brooks Running 2″ Split Short: These are tiny on the spectrum of shorts, so of course they are going to keep you cool! I am a fan of the fit on these and they are great to wear on race day, too.
  • UA HeatGear 3″ Short: I never thought that I would be in love with spandex-y shorts (same reason why I don’t love running in a sports bra), but I recently got a pair of these from Nordstrom Rack and they are fabulous! The compression fit means that you don’t even feel these on your skin. Love it!

Protect your skin

There are two things I do to make sure that my skin is protected on hot runs… sunscreen and friction defense.

Finding the right sunscreen can be hard, especially if you go back to point one about sweat running into your eyes and feeling the burn. For this, I love Sunsorb from Key West Aloe –> it works hard to make sure that your skin is protected without clogging your pores or dripping.

As for my body, I haven’t really found a sunscreen that I *love*… I’ve found that a lot of the ones that are designed for sport are sticky. Anyone have any recommendations?

The other way I protect my skin to survive summer running (and let’s be honest, any running where shorts are involved) is with Gold Bond Friction Defense.

I LOVE this stuff and it’s the best to protect against chafing. I also love that you can by a stick of it, and it lasts a REALLY long time. So it’s definitely worth the cost!
