To kick off my birthday, we started with a hike on Lookout Mountain Trail… at least we think. The trail itself wasn’t very well marked and we followed some directions from AllTrails, so I’m pretty sure that it was the trail that we were supposed to be on.

The hike started by following a Jeep track, but I don’t think any vehicle (even a Jeep) could’ve made it very far on the trail because within the first quarter mile, there was a huge tree down — which basically foreshadowed a good chunk of the hike.

This area got hit with a wildfire years ago, so a lot of the trees were burned and had fallen down in the wind. The trail itself was washed out a bit, so it made it hard to follow (although we joked that if you just looked for the spot with the most trees down, that’s where the trail was).

It was probably one of the most technical hikes I’ve ever done.

We climbed a few thousand in elevation, stopped and grabbed some lunch — the views from this spot were my favorite:

(I always hate how you can’t seem to capture how amazing it looks with a camera… just the immense size of the mountains are crazy.)

From there, we kept climbing and ended up in an area that felt a little like another world — half of the trees were burned, but still standing, and the others looked fine. With a few inches of snow on the ground, the contrast between the blackened trees and the living ones was pretty crazy:

At this point we lost the trail because it was covered in snow, so we decided to head back down the trail. Definitely a bummer that we made it that far and had to turn around… I think it would be fun to come back in the summer and try the trail again and hopefully not lose it near the summit. And of course, be prepared for climbing over and under trees the entire time.
