I think it’s safe to say that summer is officially here, and I don’t know about you, but that makes me want to spend every minute outside to soak up the sunshine. As an extra bonus, as a runner, there are some fun fitness activities that you can build in to your summer workouts to amp up your running… all while having more time outside.

I’m linking up with Rachel at Running on Happy to share my top 5 favorites:

1. Tubing/water skiing/wakeboarding

Water sports look really easy, I mean, after all, the boat just pulls you along and you don’t have to do much, right? Every time I go tubing, I wake up the next morning feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck — mostly because my arm and shoulder muscles are so sore. I guess it’s quite the workout to hang on while whipping around the lake. 😉 Now I just need to master the falling off part so I don’t always end up with water up my nose.

2. Mountain biking

Last summer was the first time that I had a *true* mountain biking experience… we were in northern Wisconsin and there were hundreds of miles of trails weaving through Wisconsin’s Northwoods. It was such a fun adventure — super technical (which means I could use some practice) and my legs were definitely burning. I can’t wait to try this one again.

3. Paddleboarding

I absolutely love paddleboarding… it’s such a solid arm and ab workout, plus you can easily just sit down and enjoy the views. With all the lakes in the Twin Cities, I can’t wait to take advantage this summer.

4. Hiking

No matter where you live, you can find a great place to hike! I think I like hiking a little bit more in the fall (since it’s not as hot), but it’s still a fun summer activity… such a great way to enjoy nature and explore different areas that you may not have visited otherwise.

5. Trail running

And perhaps the most obvious… trail running! Unlike road running, trail running can be so technical and give your mind a workout as well. It works some different muscles (and works other muscles differently), so definitely a good complement to your summer running routines.

What are your favorite summer workouts? What’s your favorite thing about summer?
