Whether it was a bad day, a good one or something in between, I turned to soda as my “reward.” A Mountain Dew was my prize for getting through a day when I couldn’t deal with one more bad thing; it was my gift to myself when I had the best day and needed that little treat just to make it a little bit better. 

What I didn’t realize was how bad this little treat really was. Filled with sugar, chemicals and everything in between, it’s surprising that I still have any teeth left after chugging down Mountain Dew for all those years (okay, a little bit of an exaggeration). It’s been 1.75 years since I quit drinking Mountain Dew and all soda, and it was something that I thought would be a lot harder than it was. 

But, it wasn’t. 

After all, I learned there are better ways to get over a tough day or to treat myself after a great one. And the funny thing is, once I broke my habit, it didn’t even sound that good anymore.

Plus, a major helper in breaking the habit? All of the good things that seemed to happen. I was able to lose 15 pounds. My skin got clearer. I didn’t hit that 3 p.m. slump. I learned to sparkle from the inside.

It was a detox that wasn’t officially called a detox, and it turned into something that changed my life — it seems like such a minor thing, but it’s made some significant impacts on my health.
