I feel like I’ve been setting a goal of reading one book a month for the past few years, and each year, I have a billion excuses why I’m terrible at it and can’t make it happen. This year, it’s a different story! I think I’ll actually be ahead of that goal for once. In case you’re wondering, here are the books I’ve checked out so far:

I think that part of this success is due to my membership with Book of the Month. Four of the books I’ve read this year (Swimming Lessons, Lucky You, Behind Her Eyes, Lies Beneath) are all from BOTM. I love that you get a new book every month because it pushes me to stay on track (oh hey there Type A personality, ha!). (Of course, if you do that math, it’s clear that I’m a little behind… haha, getting there!)

And that brings me to today’s book review, “Since We Fell” by Dennis Lehane.

Before I get to my thoughts, a quick synopsis of the book:

Since We Fell follows Rachel Childs, a former journalist who, after an on-air mental breakdown, now lives as a virtual shut-in. In all other respects, however, she enjoys an ideal life with an ideal husband. Until a chance encounter on a rainy afternoon causes that ideal life to fray. As does Rachel’s marriage. As does Rachel herself. Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths. By turns heart- breaking, suspenseful, romantic, and sophisticated, Since We Fell is a novel of profound psychological insight and tension. It is Dennis Lehane at his very best.

OK, this book is probably one of my top three favorites from the year. When I first started reading it, I assumed that it was going to be more of a chick lit book… and it quickly turned into more of a thriller, which I absolutely love (these are usually page turners for me). I actually had this with me when I was in Vegas a few weeks ago, and read over 200 pages in a matter of days because I couldn’t put it down (and being on a flight for a few hours with WiFi that doesn’t work definitely helps).

Anyways, I love the way that Dennis Lehane writes. He has a great way of pulling you in and keeping you intrigued… I literally had to keep going so I could see what happened in the next chapter, and the next. You know when you’re in a really good book and you want to read faster so you can get to the end quicker? Yeah, that’s totally this book.

If you are in need of a great read that keeps you on the edge of your seat, “Since We Fell” is the book for you. Not giving anything away, but I also liked the way that he ended the book… it was very fitting.

So there you have it! Add this one to your list.
